Phoenix Suns head coach Alvin Gentry optimistic about re-signing Steve Nash – NBA News
Phoenix Suns seem to be a franchise on the decline after their fabulous 6-7 years run as one of the top teams in the NBA.
Steve Nash was added to the Suns roster in 2005 and since then, he has won the regular season MVP twice and led the Suns deep into the playoffs on numerous occasions. They reached the Western Conference Finals on 2010, but since
then have been on a decline.
Amare' Stoudemire and head coach Mike D' Antoni signed with the New York Knicks after the 2010 season and Nash was left alone to carry the team on his shoulders. In the two seasons since 2010, the Suns have failed to make it to
the playoffs and have a 73-75 record over the two seasons.
At 38, Steve Nash will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He has made his desire about joining a championship winning team quite clear as he still hunts for an elusive NBA championship despite having won a list of individual
laurels.
But, the Suns management is quite confident they will be able to keep Nash in Phoenix.
“I feel good about it. We just need a player we can throw the ball to at the end of the game, who can get to the foul line, get us a basket or make the right play” said Suns head coach Alvin Gentry while talking to the Arizona
Republic on chances of Nash returning.
The Suns have $32 million in salary commitments for the 2012-2012 NBA season, which gives them $25 million they can spend to sign new players. This places them in a comfortable position to resign Nash and then surround him with
quality players that can reduce the pressure and responsibility from his shoulders and assist him in his quest of winning an NBA championship for himself and the Suns.
I think it’s a little unfair for me to ask Steve Nash to do that night in and night out. If we’re fortunate enough to have Steve back, and we’re going to do everything we possibly can to do that, I just think he needs some help”
said Gentry.
“We’re obviously going to have to upgrade our talent. We have to continue to get improvement out of our young players,” he added
Steve Nash revealed during the regular season that he wanted to join a championship contending club for next season as he wanted to win an NBA championship before he retired. His revelation set the NBA on fire, with many teams
pondering over the possibility of signing him. The news also set rumours on fire. Despite having won the regular season MVP twice and considered as one of the best points guards in NBA history, Nash is still to win his maiden NBA title.
