  1. I have traveled Amtrak both on the east coast and the west. I have never not gotten a seat. Although the seating is not assigned, the longer trips rarely are filled to capacity. You may have to look in a couple of cars to get a seat, but that is about as difficult as what I have experienced.

I recently took a Grey hound from Delaware to NYC and the bus was so full about ten people were standing in the aisle.

  2. you will have a seat  you dont wont have to stand

I also suggest you get  a sleeper as that way your meals in the dining car are included in the fare otherwise you will have to pay for each meal

    in the dinning car)

also be advise that the Sunset runs along a major freight corridor

and UP (the owner of the tracks doesnt really like to give Amtrak trains

priority (they are are suppose to but the UP dispatchers dont care

and give priority to their freight -thereby making amtrak trains run late

  3. You pay for a ticket you get a seat.  People like to take up two or more seats, but one ticket one seat.  You might have to ask people to move, but you paid for a seat.  This is not a subway.

  4. Reserved means you are guaranteed a seat.

Louisiana to California is pretty far.  You may want to consider getting a sleeper.

But yeah, you have a seat.

  5. All seats on the Sunset Limited are reserved. You will have a seat. That train is notoriously late getting into LA so if you are making connections, plan on being late.....I mean like hours. My last trip on that one, I was connecting in LA to the Coast Starlight to Seattle and they took us off at Ontario, CA and bused us to Santa Barbara to catch the Starlight. It's a lot of fun though.
