  1. You're kinda right with your board assignments.  It is easier to learn on a longboard but not every longboarder is a beginner.  Likewise, not every shortboarder is advanced.  As for how many boards you need?  That's up to you.  What's the surf like where you live?  I have 4 right now that I ride, two short boards, a longboard and a fish.  This covers pretty much most of my surfing conditions here.  Yep, they're expensive, that's why you don't go out and buy a bunch at a time.  You build your "quiver" over time.

  2. you can have as many surfboards as you want really. if you surf a lot in good conditions you really only need 1 board. like a mini-mal or shortboard or which ever you want. most people have both a longboard and shortboard. long board for small waves and shortboards for bigger waves. new boards are expensive but used boards usually arent. people just usually save their money for a board and get it. i hope this is all you wanted to know because i dont know what else to say. hope this helps

  3. You are going to surf camp. That;s the best place in the world to ask all ofthese questions. talk to your instructors!

Most people learn best on long boards, although I have seen lots of surfers start on a short board and master it. In the long run, there are NO RULES on what type of board you haven to learn on. Long boards are ideal for learners. There are also good internediate length boards to learn on, funshapes, mini-mals and some hybrids. That is why instructors use long boards or fun boards (or even softtops).

I ride both long and short boards, depending on the conditions, or what I feel like doing. It's nice to have a choice.

  5. like John said, ask your instructors about your first board(s).

once you get good, you will answer the other questions you have on your own. it depends on the surfer, his ability and how hard he his on boards. personally, i am very hard on boards and don't mind breaking them---i have to keep quite a few around.

  6. different type of boared for different waves

and where u wanna surf and just what type of mood ure in

if ure lazy long board just a casual session

    if ure ready to rip

short board equals u can do tricks and carve the wave

    and so-on

  7. Shap. It's really up to you. If you want to longboard, or shortboard, you choose. But you will have to buy at least two boards. A board for when it's pumping and a board for when it's closed. You have the options.
