Supakorn Utaipat leads the King’s Cup after the second round
Thailand’s Supakorn Utaipat stormed into lead after firing a five-under par 67 in the second round of the King’s Cup, at the Singha Park Khon Kaen Golf Club, on Friday, November 30, 2012.
Utaipat, who is playing in his only second tournament on the Asian Tour, outshined his opponents by accumulating a two-round total of 13-under par 131.
Singapore’s Mardan Mamat, Chris Rodgers of England and Udorn Duangdecha of Thailand shared the second position at an 11-under par overall score.
Talking to the Asian Tour’s official website, Utaipat admitted that he was feeling the pressure, entering the last two rounds.
According to him, the pressure of being on the top is something that he never felt before in his life. He said that it was a unique feeling to take the lead over some of the best players in the world.
“This is only my second start on the Asian Tour and honestly I’m feeling nervous as I’ve never been in this position before,” he said.
“Hopefully my caddy will calm me down and help me make the right decisions over the weekend. We have a good partnership and I’ll talk to him constantly to make sure everything goes according to plan,” said Supakorn.
Mamat, in the meantime, is looking forward to regain the top spot on the leaderboard, after slipping down to the second position on day two.
The Singaporean marked a great start to his campaign in Thailand, by carding a 63 in the opening round. However, he failed to replicate his first-round performance and carded a two-under par 70 on day two.
Starting on the 10th hole, he drained four birdies against a lone bogey to reach the turn in three-under.
He then failed to keep the momentum going into the front nine of the course. As a result, he failed to earn a single shot, while conceding a bogey on the eighth hole to finish the day on a low note.
“I played pretty well in my first-nine. I hit some good shots and managed to hole some putts but in my second-nine, I didn’t hit my irons as close to the pin for birdie opportunities,” he said.
