Super Bowl XLV: Sum of points scored by Giants and Patriots is likely to stay under 55
New York Giants and New England Patriots are not renowned for their sturdy defence, but the Super Bowl XLVI game at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on February 5, 2012, is expected to witness less exploding performance from the offensive units of both
the teams.
Entering the playoffs, when many were still believing that a stroke of luck might have forced the Giants into the postseason, the team stunned almost all by displaying miraculous improvement in its defensive game.
Atlanta Flacons was restricted to scoring only two points, and the defending Super Bowl champions, Green Bay Packers, which had only lost one game throughout the National Football League (NFL) present season and was one of the best offensive units of the
league, could also fail to penetrate Giants’ defence. Packers only scored 20 points.
Furthermore, the National Football Conference (NFC) championship game saw Giants crushing San Francisco 49ers, which scored 17 points.
Considering this pattern, it is expected that the resurging Giants’ defensive unit will not allow New England to play its traditional game and score too many points.
On the other hand, Patriots’ defensive unit has also been doing pretty decent lately.
During the first playoff game against Denver Broncos, Patriots’ defence only allowed 10 points.
In the American Football Conference (AFC) championship game, Baltimore Ravens only managed to score 20 points against Patriots.
Now it should also not be forgotten that both these teams have worked really hard to improve defensively and they are expected to build on the performance from their previous playoff games.
Patriots’ defensive end, Mark Anderson, said about the team’s defence.
“I think we're at a good place right now. We worked real hard, it's just one-and-done come playoff time, and we're playing our best ball right now. You should be showing up when it's playoff time. All the stuff in the regular season doesn't really matter
to this point until you get to the next level, and that's winning a championship."
Furthermore, the pressure of the Super Bowl game could overshadow the players’ spirits.
As per the statistics, the Giants have allowed 25.0 points per game, whereas the Pats have given away 21.4 points.
So if they maintain this average, it is likely that the sum of total points scored during the game will not exceed 55.
