Super Bowl XLVI: New York Giants could score more points in second half against New England Patriots
After having an on-and-off season, the New York Giants have done well to qualify for the Super Bowl XLVI matchup and no one can say that it was a stroke of luck that set up the Super Bowl XLII rematch.
Giants and New England Patriots both equally deserved to be here and once again battle for the highest National Football League (NFL) honour.
New York has improved its defence and rushing game lately and that would prove to be the team’s strength against Patriots on Sunday, February 5, 2012, at the Lucas Oil Stadium.
The Giants have followed a different pattern in terms of their scoring moves, but it is likely that they could score more points in second half of the game.
All of Giants’ players in the offensive unit, especially quarterback, Eli Manning, have a knack of performing well under pressure, which is usually at its threshold towards the end of the game.
Now, considering the form the Patriots are in, they are expected to start the game aggressively and dominate the first half.
In order to register a comeback, which the Giants certainly can, they will have to outclass the Pats.
Let’s take a look at Giants’ performance during the second half of all the games, which are a part of the team’s recent winning run.
Against Dallas Cowboys during the regular season, Giants scored 22 points in the second half as compared to 15 in first.
Against Washington Redskins, Giants managed a touchdown in the final quarter while the team had only scored a field goal in the second quarter.
Against New York Jets, Giants had 19 points in the second half while 10 in the first.
In the final game of the regular season, the Giants were more dominant in the first half than in the second.
In the first playoff game against Atlanta Falcons, Giants had two touchdowns and a field goal in the second half, and only seven points were scored in the first half.
In the game against the defending Super Bowl champions, Green Bay Packers, the Giants were dominant throughout the game, but managed more points in the first half.
However, a game before that when Giants took on the defending Super Bowl champions, Green Bay Packers, the former scored two touchdowns and a field goal in the final quarter, and in the game against San Francisco 49ers, Giants managed ten points each in
both first and second half.
During the last seven games, out of which Giants won six, the team was more dominant in the second half in four games, while it got the same number of points in one game. It only happened in two games when the Giants performed better in the first half.
The odds are certainly in favour of improved Giants’ performance in the second half against Patriots in the Super Bowl XLVI game.
