Super Bowl XLVI watched by 2.1 million online - NFL News
The Super Bowl XLVI set records in viewership this year as an approximately 111.3 million viewers tuned into the live broadcast. That was not the only record broken as for the first time the game was streamed live online and on mobile devices and the number
of people watching it online destroyed all previous records set in America.
According to NBC network which streamed the broadcast for free online approximately 2.1 million users tuned in online and on mobile devices to watch the game on their computers and smart phones.
Even though the online viewers watching the stream online paled in comparison to the television ratings the figure is still significant for new media which is steadily making inroads.
Kevin Monaghan the managing director for digital media at NBC was ecstatic at the success the stream gathered with the football fans.
In a statement to the media Monaghan said.
"The Super Bowl XLVI live stream exceeded our expectations in every way,"
Adding further that,
"Increasingly, sports fans are looking to digital coverage as a complementary 'second screen' experience, and we delivered on that promise,"
The online stream provided additional features to viewers to complement the action on the field with statistics and other facts that proved popular with the watching public.
The massive viewership of the stream beat all previous ratings for an online stream of other major sporting events.
ESPN which broadcast the Soccer World Cup in 2010 also streamed the games live and claimed that 1.1 million viewers watched the United States soccer team’s 1-0 victory over Algeria.
Football however, is the King of sports in America and the Super Bowl’s broadcast was always going to overcome any records other major sports events might have set.
“The record traffic that grew throughout the event, as well as the record high engagement numbers, underscores the complementary aspect of digital as an enhancement to our exceptional television coverage.”
With the growth of digital media every year next year’s Super Bowl may easily beat the ratings set for this year for the online broadcasts and NBC has affirmed its stance to keep providing the service well into the future for sports fans.
