Super Derby prospects begin to arrive at Louisiana Downs to contest for the $500,000 purse
The Super Derby is easily one of the biggest sporting events in Louisiana and it is considered as the premier race in the racing season. And the prospects for the Super Derby are always exciting and make the build to the race interesting.
The Grade 2 $500,000 Super Derby is run over a distance of 1 1/8 miles and it will commence on 10 September, 2011.
The aim is to reel in 10 runners to be part of the race, and the first runner to grace Louisiana Downs is the 3-year-old Donnie Von Hemel trained, Alternation.
The son of Distorted Humor got vanned in from Chicago, and with him another 3-year-old, Team Valor owned and Graham Motion trained, Meistersinger arrived on 6 September at Louisiana Downs.
All the way from New York, Malibu Glow arrived mid morning after a flight from New York, the 3-year-old colt trained by George Weaver for owners Jim and Susan Hill.
Trainer Bob Baffert is eyeing the $500,000 event and will be looking to snatch it from the rest with his talented runner Prayer for Relief, who has already bagged a Grade 2 win in the shape of West Virginia Derby and he is based in Southern California.
The line-up will eventually swell up, but the first one to enter the gates at Louisiana Downs was Alternation with his staff and trainer, Donnie Von Hemel.
The colt’s major victory this season has been the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont Park over the dirt course back on 14 May, 2011, when he went on to defeat the likes of Adios Charlie and Prime Cut with a winning time of 1 minute and 49.53 second at a
1 1/8 miles favoured distance.
Meistersinger will have Jose Lezcano as his mount said trainer Graham Motion, and the two have only once ridden together before in the Barbaro Stakes, where the pair finished 3rd on the money at Del Mar.
The son of Malibu Moon, Malibu Glow started in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes at Saratoga for George Weaver against the cream, and fell away to fifth position in his last outing.
He will be looking to improve on the in the Super Derby on 10 September, as everyone else would be looking to improve their stats just before going in to the fall season.
