Super League Preview – Wigan on the brink of shield success

Wigan Warriors can secure the Super League victory shield this weekend with a win over Hull KR at Craven Park on Sunday. The current leaders are four points clear of Warrington Wolves with two games left to play until the end-of-season playoffs begin.

The Warriors should have had the title sewn up last weekend but a last minute try from Huddersfield’s Keith Mason meant Wigan went down 18-16 to the Giants. Amos Roberts and Cameron Phelps were taken off injured in that game, but are fit to play this weekend as is Stuart Howarth. They replace Stuart Fielden who is serving a one game ban, George Carmont who has a deep cut on a finger and Karl Pryce who has knee ligament damage. Josh Charnley could also make his Wigan debut after being recalled from a loan spell at Hull KR where he scored five tries in five appearances.

Mick Vella (ribs) and utility back Ben Cockayne (knee) are doubtful for this weekend’s clash, but could be risked as Hull need the win to sustain their play-off place. One man that is also closing in on a return to the first team is Chev Walker, who has been sidelined since suffering a compound fracture of his leg in the play-off game against former club Leeds Rhinos almost a year ago. But he is set to return to competitive rugby next week for the reserve side.
It a battle of the out-of-form teams at the Grattan Stadium on Sunday as Bradford Bulls, who have lost the last 12 games in a row, face the Wakefield Wildcats, who have lost the last four games.

Bradford have no new injury concerns for their final home game of the engage Super League season whilst their opponents will welcome back Sean Gleeson and Dale Ferguson from injury as they look to keep their hopes of a top eight finish alive.
