Super League round-up
Warrington Wolves closed the gap to just two points on Super League leaders Wigan Warriors with a 16-23 win at the DW Stadium.
The Wolves were far from their best for long periods of the clash, but their opponent’s failure to capitalise on promising field positions meant the visitors had enough points on the board to register the victory.
The magic of Lee Briers’ boot was the difference between the sides, as he created three of Warrington’s four tries with expertly timed kicks which pierced the Warriors defence. It was also fitting that his drop-goal in the dying minutes put the game beyond doubt.
That result would have been met with cheers from Merseyside, as St Helens bounced back from their embarrassing defeat against the bottom club Catalan Dragons last weekend with a 32-18 victory over Harlequins.
Two tries each from Francis Meli and Paul Wellens, as well as a score from debutant Shaun Magennis, made sure the Saints kept up the pursuit of the top two, with the gap being closed to just six on Wigan.
The most dramatic game of the weekend took place at Headingly as a last-minute drop goal from Leeds skipper Kevin Sinfield meant the current champions saw off Huddersfield 21-20. The result means the visitors run of defeats at Headingly stretches back to 1959 and they now trail the play-off places by five points.
Leeds, however, will hope this win can prove the catalyst for an end of season charge towards the top of the table.
Bradford Bulls’ season continues to end with a whimper as they slipped to their eighth consecutive Super League defeat as they went down 26-30 against the Salford Reds.
There were also wins for Castleford, who smashed Wakefield 40-16, and the Crusaders, who left it late to narrowly beat Catalans 22-26.
