Super Saver to stand at WinStar after retirement
It has been revealed by the connections of Super Saver, the winner of the Kentucky Derby that the racehorse will stand at WinStar Farm for $ 20,000.
The champion thoroughbred racehorse was retired because his cannon bones were bruised. At that time, the stud money for the WinStar Farm’s homebred Super Saver was not announced. However, it has been revealed that he will be standing at WinStar, he will
be entering stud at Kenny Troutt’s racing and breeding operation for next year’s racing season.
The 3-year-old thoroughbred gave his trainer his first Kentucky Derby victory when he took over the field under the jockey Calvin Borel by 2 ½ lengths in the first jewel of the Triple Crown events.
The colt is the son of Maria’s Mon. His bruises were diagnosed after his poor performance in the Preakness Stakes, Travers Stakes and the Haskell Invitational. It was then found that the racehorse had bruises on all of his four legs. The vice president and
racing manager of WinStar Elliott Walden was reported as saying, “The bone bruising... which limited his performance during the latter half of this year, should subside with time. However, it created a slight risk that he would not return to the form of he
showed as a two year old and then through the Kentucky Derby.” He went on to say, “He has nothing more to prove.”
Before the Preakness Stakes, the 3-year-old colt had not finished in a place worse than the fourth in seven of his career starts. However, he disappointed his trainer and fans by finishing this meet in the eighth spot. The president of WinStar Farm Doug
Cauthen said, “He always showed a lot of grit until after the Derby, and I think that kind of told us there were some hidden issues, that until he went to Dr. Larry Bramlage, we did not understand.”
Super Saver started his racing career at the age of two. His maiden event was the Belmont Stakes in September, which he won by 7 lengths. The talented racehorse then bagged his four race juvenile victory by winning the Grade II Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes
that was held at Churchill in November last year. Super Saver won this event in a track record time of 1 minute and 42.83 seconds.
The first race that Super Saver contended this racing season was the Grade III Tampa Bay Derby that took place in March. He finished third in this start. The racehorse then went on to run in the Grade I Arkansas Derby in which he was beaten by a neck by
Line of David.
Todd Pletcher was extremely happy with his first Kentucky Derby victory. He was reported as saying, “His stakes-record performance in the Kentucky Jockey Club told me he was a Derby horse. I just had to harness that speed and get him ready.”
Cauthen also said, “You know, he was the one. After all the good horses Todd’s had and that we have had, he is the one that put it all together. The Derby was and always will be a magnificent moment, and I think it is foretelling of what he can throw because
he was a Derby horse, and he does have a Derby pedigree. He has got Derby potential for his offspring.”
The racehorse started 10 times in his racing career, out of which he won 3 meets. At the time of his retirement, the thoroughbred colt had earned $ 1,889,766 in the form of purse money.
