Has anyone owned or sailed on a Super Snark? And if you have what was good about it and what was bad. I am just beginning sailing.

  1. It was very good, especially for learning to sail. It wasnt able to take high winds, but it responded well in light to medium and always floated. I have seen them turtled. We used to let the ids race on the snark while we raced Flying Scots. It had a good handicap.

  2. I have an old Sea Snark and I like it. The differences between the models of boats they have made over the years are fairly minor, mostly size and the newer ones have covered hulls (mine has exposed styrofoam and holds up much better than you would imagine, though I am planning to glass it). They are light enough to cartop solo without any contraptions for loading/unloading or getting to the water. They sail pretty well, but going upwind is a chore (have to tack more times than seems necessary). They can flip in high winds, but I figued out a minor modification to help a lot with that. I made a little tiller extension that is just a piece of 1x2 (sand corners well so you don't get splinters) tied loosely to the tiller. This allows you to hike out somewhat.  When you see people flip these, they are usually sitting right in the middle and when it heels they slip/slide/roll to the low side and over she goes. Get a big dry bag (from an outdoor sports store) that clips to the "seat" (it's not really a seat, but you know what I mean and you can caryy quit a bit of stuff that will stay dry, stay with the boat and provide its own flotation if you flip. If you ever need to repair the styrofoam, get 2 part epoxy that takes overnight to cure (the quick stuff can get too hot if it is "real" epoxy, and if it isn't real, you don't want it). To fill deep scratches or holes in styro, mix some crushed styro (just tear up some that came with other things packed in it) into epoxy to make a slurry, overfill and then sand it when it dries out.
