Super slow transfer to external hard drive?

I am borrowing an external hard drive from my aunt. It's a 200 GB drive. It takes me 8 minutes to move a 700 MB file from my internal drive to this external drive. I could burn the files with my dvd burner faster than this. Is this normal?

Depends on the age of your computer. If it is an older model, chances are you are running 1.1 USB instead of the faster 2.0.
