Super storm Sandy: MLB, Players step up to the plate to help - MLB News
Super Storm Sandy has left its devastating mark over a significant part of the North-Eastern United States. Precious lives have been lost and a lot of infrastructure has been destroyed. At this critical point in time, the baseball community has taken the
right step by coming forward to the help of those in need at this hour.
Major League Baseball and Major League Baseball Player’s Association have joined hands to make a $1 million donation for the Sandy victims. The amount will be disbursed through the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army and Feeding America. Such a gesture
would certainly encourage others to contribute towards the relief work. It is also a kind endorsement by the baseball community for these organisations that has been doing a tremendous job for so long.
Commissioner of MLB, Bud Selig hoped for the speedy recovery of those who were affected by the storm. "As our thoughts and prayers remain with all those who have been impacted by this tragedy, it is a privilege for Major League Baseball to support our fans
and their communities during this urgent time of need," he said. He also showed his gratitude to the community leaders, volunteers, first responders and humanitarian organisations for their valiant efforts.
Many baseball teams were also affected by the storm. The New York franchises were located in some of the hardest hit areas. The New York Yankees have already pledged $500,000 for the relief work. Several other teams’ hometowns also lay in the path of the
storm.
The Oakland Athletics have announced that they will be accepting monetary donations for the victims through the team’s community fund. The proceeds will be disbursed through the Salvation Army and Human Society of the United States.
The newly crowned World Series Champions, San Francisco Giants announced that their players were intending to make donations and the club will match dollar for dollar in the effort to raise funds. Renowned radio personality emcee Renel Brooks-Moon encouraged
the Giants’ fans to contribute to the noble cause as well. "Just think," she said."Everybody here today, one dollar from all of us, what that can do. That can really, really help."
Texas Rangers reliever Joe Nathan and the Texas Rangers Baseball Foundation made a joint contribution of $25,000. Nathan grew up in Pine Bush, NY and played college baseball as well.
We hope that the players and the franchises in baseball as well as other sports will make further coordinated efforts to help those in need. This help can be both in monetary terms as well as urging others to make donations in the noble cause. These victims
of Hurricane Sandy are those people who make up the fan following of these stars and it is certainly the responsibility of these big names to make sure that they give back to the communities who have provided them with so much.
