Question:

Super strength?

just read about a condition called "Myostatin-related muscle hypertrophy". When a person has a deficiency in Myostatin production, they exhibit a ridiculous amount of strength and muscle mass, up to 40% more than a normal human being. One example is 19 month-old Liam Hoekstra, who has thigh muscles reminiscent of Lance Armstrong, and performed his first iron cross at 5 months.

What i'm wondering is if this condition makes a person super strong, would it be so far-fetched to think that historical figures such as Hercules and Sampson had this genetic mutation? Is there any historical evidence or research to support that theory?

  1. Hercules and Samson were only fictional characters.

  2. no if there were it already be on the news

  3. First off lets get a few things straight, Hercules yes is a fictional god not of this planet or if are one to argue that he exists he would likely not have DNA similar to us as his father Zeus is a god and his mother is the only mortal however all historical documentation on him renders him fictional.  Samson actually a man from the middle east has plenty of historical documentation to support his existence.  (No not the Bible).  Next it is not impossible to assume that this was a source of strength.  It is rare but it is also naive to assume that there could not be cases that we as a medical community missed.  The challenge is the baby you refer to Liam, now is eating six FULL meals a day and struggles to gain weight, due to his rapid metabolism.  To have this aggressive version of this condition, could worsen as he grows to need more and more calories.  It is neither impossible or unlikely that he will fight malnourishment his entire life.  To my knowledge the most accurate historical information on Sampson did not mention this continual eating.  However, your theory is not impossible.  Just impossible to prove.  Great thought...Keep thinking.
