Superb Mark Sanchez scores as New York Jets sink Buffalo Bills – NFL Recap
New York Jets came all guns rolling into their season opener as they thrashed Buffalo Bills 48-28 on Sunday, September 09, 2012.
Jets entered MetLife Stadium hoping to replenish the scoring charts this time after a reckless performance in the preseason in which the starting offence failed to score a touchdown in any of the four preseason games.
There were concerns before this game that whether Jets offence would go through the entire game without even scoring a touchdown. However, all those concerns were put to dust as the offence managed to break the franchise record for scoring most points in
first week of any season.
Sanchez was in the forefront of the rejuvenated offensive team. He was able to score three touchdowns and completed 19 out of 27 passes while covering 266 yards. Sanchez said:
"It's a great win, there's no doubt about it. But, we've got lots of work to do."
Jets defensive line was also up to the mark as they managed to contain Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Jets’ all three cornerbacks scored at least one interception. Linebacker Bart Scott said:
"We're gonna keep digging, get in this trench and keep working hard, man. We got a tough opponent (Pittsburgh) next week. We're not happy with this, we know what we came for and we don't care what other people think about us."
Jets started the game with both Sanchez and Tim Tebow. Sanchez opened the scoring card for Jets as he threw a 12-yard pass to Jeremy Kerley for a touchdown.
Going into the second quarter, Sanchez again made Bills defence look ugly with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Stephen Hill who caught the ball superbly. Kerley then went on to score a touchdown while returning a punt, taking the score to 21-0.
Running back C.J. Spiller then opened the scoring chart for Bills with a striking 56-yard run to reach the end zone. The first half ended at 27-7 with Jets in lead.
Jets got the best possible start to the second half as Antonio Cromartie made an interception on Fitzpatrick and then went on 40 yards to score a touchdown.
Then, rookie Hill caught a 17-yard pass for touchdown. Bills then moved up with a five-yard pass from Fitzpatrick to make the score 41-14.
In the final quarter, Fitzpatrick scored two superb touchdowns but were clearly out of the game. The game ended with running back Shonn Greene’s one-yard run for a touchdown, making the score 48-28.
Bills offence looked shell shocked against Darrelle Revis and company. In the first half of the game, it looked all the way down for them.
It was all the bad news for Bills during the game as their wide receiver David Nelson got a knee injury while running back Fred Jackson also hurt his leg.
Bills defence was very disappointing as their new arrival Mario Williams was unable to have considerable influence on the game. According to the Associated Press, Bills head coach Chan Gailey said:
"We're not going to go around like the sky is falling, I'm not going to do that. I'm not going to let them do that."
