Superb performance results in Round 1 heat win for Jay Quinn at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime
New Zealand’s Jay Quinn powered into the second round (Round of 48) at Quiksilver Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola after delivering an outstanding performance to clinch the win in the 24th heat of Round 1 (Round of 96) at the primary event
site of Itauna Beach in Saquarema, Brazil, on Wednesday, May 23.
Brazil’s Heitor Alves successfully made the Round 2 cut as well after managing to finish the heat in runner-up place. Brazil’s Jihad Khodr finished third, while Australia’s Lincoln Taylor rounded out the fourth position. Both the surfers were eliminated
from the competition due to their bottom-two finish.
Given an opportunity to grab a share of the $US 250,000 prize purse and up to 850 coveted Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) ranking points, some of the best surfers from around the globe had decided to travel to Brazil to compete in the latest ASP
PRIME event of the year. The opening day had already made it clear that every surfer in contention for the event title meant business and did not plan on holding back. The sea contributed to the excitement and intensity of the battles by firing four-to-six
foot waves in the direction of the surfers, giving them an ample opportunity to dig deep in their bag of tricks to pull out their most technical manoeuvres.
The final heat of Round 1 saw Quinn, Alves, Khodr and Taylor take each other on in a four-man battle for the Round 2 spot.
Quinn read the conditions on hand exceptionally well and paddled to a spot from where it became possible for him to catch two of the heat’s best waves. The sea fired the first juicy wave in his direction in the opening minutes of the battle, which he utilised
to post an 8.43 on the score-board. Getting hold of another ripe wave later in the heat, the Kiwi surfer added a 9.07 to his account, consequently moving to a heat-total of 17.50 points. The massive two-wave total kept him way ahead of his rivals on the score-board
until the end to see him off to victory.
Alves finished in runner-up place with a heat-total of 12.40 points, which included a 5.97 and 6.43-point ride, thus getting his place confirmed in the next round.
A two-wave total of 12.04 points placed Khodr in third place, while Taylor rounded out the bottom-position with a heat-total of 11.16 points. Both the surfers consequently found themselves removed from the competition field at the latest ASP PRIME event
of the year.
