  1. All your life you will travel at subsonic speeds, no matter what you do, except if you'll be lucky enough to be a fighter jet pilot to travel above 864km/h or 540mph, then you will be traveling supersonic.

    Speed of sound: 240m/s.

    Seconds in one hour: 3600

    Speed of sound in km/h = 0.24 x 3600 = 864km/h

    1 mile = 1.6km

    Speed of sound in mph = 864 / 1.6 = 540mph

  2. supersonic speed is going faster than the speed of sound, subsonic is going slower than the speed of sound. ex. passenger jets travel at subsonic speeds (usually 500 mph or so). fighter jets can travel faster than the speed of sound (supersonic speeds).

  3. To travel at supersonic speed means that you are travelling faster than sound.Sound is a vibration that travels through an elastic medium as a wave. The speed of sound describes how much distance such a wave travels in a certain amount of time. In dry air at 20 °C (68 °F), the speed of sound is 343 m/s (1235 km/h, or 770 mph, or 1129 ft/s, or approximately 5 seconds per mile).

Unless the vehicle has been specially designed the forces acting on it as it approaches and passes through the "sound barrier" can be destructive. Many experimental aircraft were lost and the pilots killed during early attempts to exceed this speed.

Supersonic speed is the realm of military aircraft although Concorde was a scheduled passenger carrying aircraft that was designed to travel supersonically. A land based car is the only non-aircraft to break the sound barrier. The space shuttle is designed to fly faster than sound.

All other means of transport including conventional passenger aircraft cannot fly at this speed. They would most probably disintegrate if by accident they were flown at the speed of sound.

  4. I'll give you the best I remember as I sit and write. 714 mph, depending on the altitude and humidity, or in other words, the general density of the air.  This is a general estimate of "The Sonic Barrier" or the point at witch you go faster than the sound waves you make.
