  1. thats not what us educated people want, we realize the need for responsible breeding.  All pet quality dogs should be fixed.  No more (I think my s**+-poo is preggers.  Help!?) kind of questions.  All dogs should not be fixed only those that are owned and bred by responsible breeders should remain intact.

  2. Everyone who purchases a PET dog with no intentions to show it in conformation should have the dog spayed/neutered.

I think you're misunderstanding the "hate" on breeders.  It's the IRRESPONSIBLE breeders -- the backyard breeders and puppy mills -- that we don't agree with.  Not enough puppy buyers know the difference between a responsible breeder and an irresponsible one, and it seems like most of them don't care anyways.

Responsible breeders show their dogs in dog shows.  When a dog wins a champion title in a show, that PROVES that it is a wonderful example of its breed, and therefore worthy of breeding.  Responsible breeders have their dogs tested for genetic diseases also, to make sure that they are in good health; if the dog is found to have some hereditary disease, the dog is not bred.  A responsible breeder carefully selects a mate for his dog, one also with good conformation, health and temperament, to make for the healthiest, happiest puppies.  A responsible breeder carefully screens new homes for puppies, to make sure that they get the best care and the most love possible for the rest of their lives.  If at any time the new owners cannot keep the puppy, even 5 or 10 years later when the puppy is all grown up, the breeder always takes the dog back and keeps it or finds it a new loving home.

An irresponsible breeder does NONE of these things.

  3. 1.  I don't think we necessarily want all breeders to quit, just the ones with bad intent/unhealthy practices; those who over-breed, breed fighters, or who breed dogs that are sick or have genetic malfunctions.

    2.  I will have you know my dog was a street dog, and she's quite fancy her own bad self.  There are benefits to giving a shelter dog a home, but people will still pursue what they want.

    3.  The point of having a pet spayed or neutered is so they don't off their leash or out of their yard and go out to help create more unwanted/homeless pets.

    Hope this helps.

  4. not all dogs would be fixed just the pet quality.  and it would be a good thing.

  5. I've owned several large breed dogs (german shepherd, english mastiff, bull mastiff, rottweiler and pitbull).  They were all male and it is necessary to neuter males as it prevents them from becoming frustrated from the inability to mate.  This frustration can lead to aggression which can be very dangerous with larger more powerful breeds.  I've never been interested in breeding dogs and have only seen positive results with neutering my male dogs.

  6. Any dog who is not:

    1. Owned by someone who is knowledgeable about the breeding process

    2. Thoroughly tested for genetic health defects

    3. Of sound temperament

    4. Of sound structure

    5. In accordance with breed standard

    6. Physically and mentally able to perform the task he was bred for

    should be neutered.

All irresponsible, uneducated, greed driven breeders should stop breeding.  The reputable, knowledgeable, experienced, compassionate breeders should indeed continue breeding.

  7. To answer your one question, yes, it IS possible for a MALE dog to be 'altered' and be able to reproduce again, but that is only through an implant in their body that releases medication that squeltches the production of sperm.  I haven't done too much research on it though, and I'm unsure about female doggy birth control.

However, typically, no.  The surgery involved in spaying and neutering a dog involved the removal of their reproductive organs in total, leaving it impossible for them to be replaced.

If all the reputable breeders stopped breeding long enough for all the mixed breeds and strays to find a home, we would lose out on some very wonderful breeds entirely.  I would venture to say, at the rate things are going, it would be impossible to back track and find homes for all of them in time to continue proper breeding at a later point.

It is not the reputable breeders that are causing the mass overpopulation as is, it is not even the reponsible owners who happen to have unaltered animals, it is the irresponsible owners and poor breeders who add to the over population.

A reponsible owner with an unaltered animal knows how to prevent accidental litters and is sure to do so.  A reputable breeder has a waiting list of people to sell a puppy to, so none of their puppies go without a home.  These are also often the very same people who do rescue and volunteer work.

  8. No one said they wanted "all" breeding to stop.

If it was my way.. it would only be reputable breeders who would be allowed to breed..  those who show and do genetic health testing.

People wouldnt be able to find a dog at a petshop or in the newspaper..  they'd almost have to go to a shelter to get a dog, as reputable breeders rarely have a litter.

If it happened that way, within 10 year's time.. the only reason we'd have for shelters is a "lost and found" for pets..  a rescue's only purpose would be those odd situations in which someone cannot keep their pet, such as death of the owner, or someone loosing their home due to natural disaster, etc.

Once a dog is spayed and neutered, no they can never have puppies.  The reproductive organs are removed.
