How can you use a garden hose filled with water to determine equal elevations for distant points?

  1. Connect one end of a hose to a tank of water.

    Get a hand full of stakes and a marker.

    Walk away from the tank and put a stake in the ground.

    Lower the hose along the stake until water just starts to come out.  Mark the stake at that height.  That mark is at the same level as the water in the tank.

    Repeat the process raising or lowering the hose to mark where "the level" is.

    Fill or grade to match the marks on the stakes.
