Suppose the New York City and St. Louis railroad stations are 1000 miles apart via the shortest train route. A train leaves New York City headed for St. Louis, traveling at an average of 80 miles per hour. Two hours later a train leaves St. Louis headed for New York City and it averages 60 miles per hour. When they meet, which one will be nearer St. Louis? Explain why you believe your answer is correct.

  1. When they meet, they will both be the same distance from St Louis

  2. So Simple you don't need a calculator. At the 8 hr mark the one going 80mph from new york will be at 640 miles. The 60 mph one leaving STL 2hrs later will be at 360 miles. 640 + 360= 1000. So the train leaving STL to go to new york will get there first.

  3. AVERAGE 80 mph.  There'll be a bunch of slow orders, especially on the NYC end where it's crossing the Applachians.

And don't forget the St. Louis train hit an automobile in Illinois, so it was delayed for an hour while the police and fire crews sorted everything out.
