Suppose you have a student with a health impairment, in your classroom, who requires accommodations and modifications to his assignments and work load. Other students have been complaining by saying,"That's not fair." He is hearing these comments and feels that he will not have friends if you have different expectations for him.

HOW WOULD YOU EDUCATE THE CLASS ABOUT THE HEALTH IMPAIRMENT?

  1. i also have something like that but my teacher is very, very discreet about it and if the class persists you could strike up a debate in health about the childs needs for accomedations never metioning his name

  2. I always say "equal is not always the same". That usually sums it up.

  3. Bring the school nurse or another medical doctor in to explain to the kids in terms they can undestand what having a disability is like.

In my school we did this thing called MAP day (making a plan) which used different activities and games to show how having an impairment can affect people.

The most effective game we did was when the teacher divided the kids into different random groups by having everyone pick different colored candy from a jar and everyone that had red went together in a group and so on, except one kid from the class got a color nobody else had so he/she was then isolated from the rest of the group and it showed everyone how it felt to be isolated.

Another one is the teacher had kids to art projects but made the kids wear socks and a mitten on their hands and try to cut to illustrate how hard fine motor skills are for some people so they wouldn't tease people about that anymore.
