Supreme Court gives verdict against Spanish Footballers Association
The Spanish club, Barcelona’s players decided to go on strike on the 2nd of January 2011. The reason for the strike was quite simple and it was the Players’ Union that decided not to play on that particular day because
the players in the 2nd and 3rd tier of the Spanish La Liga were not getting paid.
The second and third tier teams did not receive their pays for five consecutive months. Therefore, the players wanted to act and they did so as they decided to go out on a strike by not playing on the 2nd of January.
The Spanish Champions Barcelona were to play a match on 2nd of January 2011 and it was to be their first fixture in 2011. However, they decided to become a part of the Players’ Union movement and they did not want to play on that particular date.
With such heavy criticism taken in by many clubs, they decided to take the case to the Supreme Court. Despite such a big movement by the players, the Supreme Court decided to reject the injunction by the Spanish Footballers Association
(AFE). Therefore, Barcelona are now going to face their next challenge on 2nd of January 2011 rather than 3rd - the date that was decided by the players themselves.
On Thursday, at midday, the Spanish Champions received a message from the Professional Football League (LFP) to confirm the fact that the Supreme Court has rejected the injunction that was made by the Players’ Union, also known
as Spanish Footballers Association (AFE). According to the judicial reasoning, which were presented by legal representatives of the Professional Football League, all the matches that were scheduled on the 2nd are still going to be played on the
2nd. The hearing was heard at the jurisdictional body yesterday and it was decided that the players that are on strike have to step out of it and play and in case they do not, they may be fined for it.
It was known that the Professional Football League was going to face a loss of around 20 million Euros in case this match did not take place. Being the first match after the New Year, attendance was supposed to be high in all the
Spanish Stadiums; therefore, the football body did not really want to take risk as they went forward and decided to reach the players’ demands as soon as possible.
The message that was received by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Barcelona-c39078 from the Professional Football League (LFP) read:
“The games corresponding to rounds 17 and 18 of the BBVA and Adelante leagues will be played on the days originally stipulated by the National League, namely January 2 and 3, 2011.”
Now, with the decision finally made, Barcelona are going to be playing their first 2011 fixture against Levante on 2nd of January 2011 rather than the 3rd.
