Supreme Spirit, one with obvious claims in Watch The St Leger Live On ATR Fillies´ Handicap at Wolverhampton
It was never easy for Supreme Spirit to recover after an early mess at Ffos Las, where the surface was too soft. Peter Makin’s charge deserves extra credit for her wonderful runner-up effort in the Lonetree Limited Mcdonald's Fillies' Handicap in early September.
The 5-year-old is back to form with the Ffos Las second, and gets the vote over Lady Layla and Subtle Knife in the Watch The St Leger Live On ATR Fillies´ Handicap, taking place at Wolverhampton on Thursday, September 13th.
Supreme Spirit has a decent track record at this venue. On her Wolverhampton debut under the care of George Margarson last season, the mare performed magnificently to ensure a classy win in the At The Races Sky 415 Fillies' Handicap.
After joining the new yard, the daughter of Invincible Spirit made her first outing in July this year. She looked a bit rusty, and the audience at Newbury saw her finishing eighth in the Betfair Fillies' Handicap.
She quickly got her act together, and demonstrated a fascinating show on her last visit here. It was a very close battle, as the top-8 runners crossed the wire simultaneously. A narrow defeat gave the mare plenty of confidence, which she used to get a notable
place last time.
Without a shadow of doubt, Supreme Spirit is now in very good shape. She has many things in favour, including the conditions. So, there is no reason why she should not come up with a bold show.
Lady Layla has a decent track at Wolverhampton, as she was runner-up on her both starts here this season. Yet, her supporters cannot afford to relax, as the Bryan Smart-trained is facing a lot tougher opposition this time. A step in class is a major concern.
Subtle Knife has performed well at this level, but does not have any know-how about this track. Despite being in good rhythm, Giles Bravery’s trainee will be under some pressure on her Wolverhampton debut.
Both Subtle Knife and Lady Layla have a few questions to answer. So, the safest option is to go with Supreme Spirit, who seems to have regained momentum. Good luck to all the horses.
