Supression of emotions, meditation, and Yoga?

I rage...alot. But I also watch alot of Star Trek and I truly admire the Vulcans for their ability to supress their emotions and meditate accordingly. Obviously I can't go study on Vulcan for a few years, so what is a good alternative (here on Earth) to practice meditation and emotion suppression? Yoga? Tai Chi? I need guidance and suggestions to get me started on my path to self-control

  1. Hello Gravity

Unfortunately all of actions that you have mentioned will not stop your emotions, nothing will do that as you are human & go with the territory!

Meditation etc will calm the mind, making thoughts & emotions more realisable, you will have more mastery over your reactions to what you feel.

  2. You say you "rage...alot".  I have several questions about this rage and its expression:  1)  First of all, what is your astrological sign, and what else is in your chart.  Do you know?  2)  When you rage, do you hurt people or do things get destroyed, or do you simply have "a few good words" to say to uh, the idiots that provoked you in the first place?  Do you immediately let loose and "let 'em have it?" or does it take a while for the "slow burn to ignite into a fire"?  3)  Have you ever destroyed someone else's property?  4)  Have you ever hurt another human or animal being, especially a woman or a child?  5)  Are you "constantly pissed off" about little nit-picky things, or just pretty much everything, or do you save this "rage" for the really big stuff?  6)  Are you scared about what you might do, or are you loud and intimidating, but never lose physical control? (Bark worse than bite?) 7)  Have people or animals expressed that they're afraid of you before?  Have you lost relationships or had trouble with the law because of this "rage" and how you express it?  If the answer to all these questions is "No.", then I am not adequately convinced there is a problem with your "rage" and how you express it.  This is an extremely intense time to be alive, and there are a lot of criminal, moral-less people wandering around this planet at this time, many of whom are in positions of power over us all.  Until you can give me a better picture of what's going on with you exactly, I'll stop commenting, but I do think the practice of meditation is excellent for EVERYONE.  I also think Buddhism has very, very much to offer, no matter the kind of Buddhist practice you look at and incorporate into your life.  Trying reading a book called "Being Peace" by Thich Nhat Han.  This might help you.  Remember also that "Tension is NOT strength.  It is an expression of weakness and lack of control and mastery over the self."  It is also ALL about fear, so you might do well to look at what it is you are afraid of.  On a personal note, I am a 6' red-headed, green eyed Irish woman with 6 out of 9 of my planets in fire and my Sun in Taurus.  I was NOT made to be a mouse, nor was I made to hold back and mince my words.  I did incarnate to learn to use the incredible power I have, and to use it well.  As for you, a practice of yoga, meditation and other body-centered and spiritually centered movement can ONLY be a good thing.  Chronic rage also not only bespeaks a liver/gall bladder imbalance, but can further derange the condition.  It may be that you are just "running too hot", and doing things to further upset the condition, like drinking alcohol or eating too much meat, for example.  Post a log of what you've eaten in the last week, and I can help you get a handle on the diet aspect of all of this.  Sometimes young men (and some young women), just do run too hot for a few decades (Puppy Balls or "Young Turkism"...); this condition usually does take care of itself overtime, but not always.  Seek the guidance of older and more learned men.  It is a good sign that you are at least aware of the problem.  It is also a good sign you're trying to channel and to change that red, hot energy to something more cool blue and peace-loving.  Kudos, and yeah, Tai Chi is one of the best things I ever do for myself.

Thanks for getting back.  I'm clearer now about what you're dealing with.  Everyone incarnates with work to do and with something called a "chief feature".  Yours sounds like it's impatience.  If you give your birth date and time, I can let you know more about what your astrological picture looks like and how it (and you) operate and manifest in the world.  Nothing is ever "wrong" or "fatally flawed" on this Earth.  You're here for multiple reasons, all of them good from my perspective, and it truly all is about the learning.  It sounds like you were given this really intense, fiery, passionate personality in order to learn how to master it and how to use it to its fullest for the good of not just yourself, but for all humanity, so the questions then are not "What the h**l is wrong with me," but how can I channel and change this really intense, powerful energy in to something positive, and kind, powerful and beneficial for not just yourself (again) but for all of human- ( and animal and plant) kind.  Yes.  Go after all the healing modalities you possibly can to effect the changes you're looking for: Yoga, Tai Chi, Dance, reading, movement, swimming (there's nothing like jumping in a lake to cool that mind and cool that body!).  People with your personality type are often easily frustrated, extremely sensitive, REQUIRE great freedom, NEED to be able to get up and move anytime they want, need or like, and so do not do well in settings that require them to be under control at all times or to sit in a chair behind a desk.  Sometimes it is hard for them to find and to keep jobs and relationships.  Sometimes they carry immense guilt and immense pain about their past behaviour and lives.  They can find it hard to be around other people, and so can be incredibly isolated, incredibly fearful (underneath all that heat and rage and fire) and in deep despair that they will ever be able to find someone or something that can help them transmute all that fire into something powerful and beautiful.  Physical movement is key for you, and that is an incredible gift, to be moving centered, because many of the eggheads that run this planet forget that we live in physical bodies that need to move to integrate learning, and facts, and figures and ideas.  We are not just heads, we are hearts and hands and bodies as well, and it's getting increasingly more difficult for those who are movement centered to survive and to thrive on this earth.  Never lose sight of the fact that the Gods and the Goddesses don't make junk, and they don't make mistakes, either.  You are here for many, many reasons, all of them good as long as you remain in the light and keep going forward.  I hear and see a deep wisdom in you in regard to those things you are attracted to to heal and to learn and to make balance in yourself.  Follow those.  You are exactly where you should be, and exactly on the right path.  Look into Contact Improvisation as well.  It'll help you heal your relationships with women, and with animals.  You are already started on your path, because you know and are willing to admit there's a problem (or several).  It actually isn't important which path you follow first, as long as you are in positive movement towards a goal.  I would deeply be careful of any path that is warlike or would increase that heat, rage, violence or intensity.  It will be necessary that the basis of your healing path be towards love, towards compassion, towards gentleness, towards beauty, towards kindness to yourself and all other beings.  The intention here is KEY, and I think you already know this, so trust yourself.  I think Dan Millman (Way of the Peaceful Warrior) would be an excellent teacher for you, so check him out online.  You will also need at least one person in your life who can listen really well, and will tell you the truth when you least want to hear it, in order to be safe and well.  If that cannot be a friend or a lover, try to find a therapist that can work in that role for you.  Oftentimes, people who are like the picture you've painted of yourself have been IMMENSELY and intensely violated either in their early lives, or in their last incarnation.  It is like a child who is screaming, and because the children are the most sensitive, and usually the first to know when life is "wrong" or out of balance, they are the beings we should (and must) listen to and believe first.  What happens to those children, those wise beings who are not listened to, and not heeded???  They become adults in your situation.  Again, a therapeutic setting is the best place to work this all out.  Have you also considered anger management classes or a men's group?  There is powerful amazing work being done in many such settings.

  3. Yoga and meditation might be a good place to start for learning how to calm yourself. I know there are some religions that implement calming aspects in them, but I'm not sure if that's what you're looking for. Good luck in your search!
