Question:

Surely it is impossible to conceive during your period?

This question came up during a coffee morning. A friend of my wife said her neice is adamant that her new baby was conceived by way of unprotected s*x with her husband during her period. Every one said this could not be but the girl apparently says there is an exception to every rule and she must be it.

Now i am an old codger, dad of 4 and grand dad to 6 and, whilst I admit s*x education was rudimentary to say the least in my younger days, both my wife and I, and my wifes pals who are all in their 60's say this is physically impossible.

Surely the young Lady in question has a guilty secret (i say that as her husband works off shore and is away a lot!) and this could NOT happen.

  1. It's not impossible if she has irregular periods or doesn't ovulate regularly. She could have started ovulating at the end of the period.

A lot of women don't have 28-day cycles and don't ovulate regularly, so it's definitely possible.

  2. Its not entirely unlikely...actually its kinda common!!!

  3. There is a definite chance that any woman can get pregnant during her periods. Though the chances of pregnancy during periods are usually low during periods, they exist for all women. During periods, the chances of pregnancy are comparatively lower at the onset of a woman's period and increase just after her periods. The truth is that there is no predictable time during the month when the risk of pregnancy can be said to be absent.

The debate on whether or not a woman can get pregnant during her period has been going on for decades now. Just like every woman is different, so are her hormonal balances and hence her menstrual cycle. Though there are generalities on which some ground basics of menstruation and pregnancy can be formed, but eventually it all boils down to individual physiology. So, yes, you can get pregnant during your periods.

    Hope this helps :)

  4. It can happen it is unlikely but it have happened before.  Some women's body work in different ways there are always exceptions to the rule.

  5. While it is very rare, it is absolutely, definitely a possibility to conceive while on your period. Most of the time a woman ovulates before the mentrual flow, and by the time the bleeding occurs the egg is no longer able to be fertilized. However ovulation can occur at the beginning, during, or even towards the end of the mentrual flow so sexual intercourse, with sperm introduced, can definitely result in fertilization and conception. Remember also, sperm can survive and be viable up to a week inside the female body so even if sexual intercourse occurred days before the actual mentrual flow, conception is still a possibility. Your wife's friend's niece is right, and her baby was conceived in a very normal, possible way. I would suggest apologizing!

  6. HA! HA! HA! Are you  naive as is your wife, and she should know better.  As long as you have a little swimmer who is going for the gold you can bet you are going to get pregnant.  That is like the old joke What do you call a woman using the rhythm method?  A Mother.  s*x Ed 101 you have unprotected s*x you can get pregnant.  Don't be so quick to desparage this young womans reputation with gossip.

  7. The ONLY time that a girl most LIKELY will not get pregnant during her period is on the last day of her period.  All the other days she can still get knocked up.

  8. Well...sir...I got pregnant on the very last day of my period so it CAN happen, and my husband is not off shore and is home very night and we work the same hours so we know where each other are at all times. 29 weeks and 3 days pregnant with a baby boy that was conceived the 4th day of my 5 day period.

  9. I think it is hard, but not impossible. Even doctors have a lot of reserve concerning the matter. A woman gets pregnant whilst she ovulates, and studies have found That this process is possible even during period, so it's hard really to believe, but as well explainable.

  10. yea you can get pregnant while she is on her period

  11. It's highly unlikely but it is possible as sperm may survive up to 7 days ( usually less though ) and if a woman ovulates a week later then she could become pregnant from the leftover sperm.

  12. yes it is possible if she ovulates a few days after her period.
