Suresh Raina manages to stay under ICC radar
Almost a week ago it seemed that the cricket World was hit again by another bookmaker related scandal when news came to the surface that, India’s young batsman Suresh Raina was seen numerous times with a woman believed to be an associate of an illegal bookmaker
during India’s tour to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758.
According to reports, video footage was handed over to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) by the Sri Lankan cricket board, after the footage was taken from the CCTV installed in the hotels where the players were staying.
The news created headlines after the fact that, International Cricket Council was totally oblivious of this incident. The Board of Control for Cricket in India chose to brush the matter under the carpet, asking the Sri Lankan cricket board not to go public
about their findings.
Last week when the International Cricket Council finally discovered this incident, the general perception was that Board of Control for Cricket in India will have one h**l of time clearing its position in front of the International cricketing body.
Ironically, the ICC has chosen not to twist BCCI’s arm with regards to this matter. International Cricket Council’s intentions were further cleared when the International Cricketing body came out with a statement that it expects the Board of Control for
Cricket in India and the Sri Lankan cricket board to resolve this matter between them.
Perhaps the most confusing part of this incident was that, why wasn’t Suresh Raina reported to the International Cricket Council? Why did the Sri Lankan cricket board give the CCTV evidence to the BCCI and not to the International Cricket Council? And why
was the Board of Control for Cricket in India quiet after receiving the video evidence?
The Board of Control for Cricket in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 was not only quiet about the incident, but also chose not to take any action against the Indian batsman, Raina. This was probably an offence that could have landed any cricket board in hot water.
The reason why everyone was expecting a stiff reaction from the International Cricket Council was because the ICC has been very busy and aggressive to root out corruption from cricket after three Pakistani players playing during the English tour this summer
were accused of spot fixing, with video footage evidence.
Things were looking bleak for bookmakers since the International Cricket Council suspended the three accused Pakistanis (Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif) from all formats of international and domestic cricket.
Suresh Raina might have faced a similar fate, but the International Cricket Council has not handed out any official punishment or verdict against Suresh Raina, BCCI nor the Sri Lankan cricket board.
Earlier last week it was reported that the International Cricket Council’s will look into the matter of Suresh Raina’s rendezvous with an associate of a bookmaker and the reasons to why the Board of Control for Cricket in India did not share the evidence
with the International Cricket Council immediately.
