Suresh Raina’s issues with short-pitched balls needs to be addressed, says Ian Chappell – Cricket News Update
Former Australian skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ian-Michael-Chappell-c63914, has pointed out that the aggressive Indian batsman, Suresh Raina’s continuous difficulty against short-pitched balls has emerged as a matter of concern for the World Champions.
In the fourth One Day International (ODI) against England, which ended in tie, Raina smashed a stunning 84-run-knock and propped his side up to 280, but remained unsuccessful in playing bouncers with confidence throughout his innings.
Moreover, the Englishmen picked up Raina’s wicket with short-pitched deliveries on a number of occasions during India’s tour to England.
Despite conceding the fact that Raina has been a key man in India’s limited-over glory over the last few years, Chappell stated in plain terms that the Indian coaching staff seems to have failed to train the youngster against short deliveries.
“Raina is a left-hander of the modern generation and has played a role in India’s success in the shorter versions of the game, but was also part of the problem in their recent abject failure in the Test series in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013,” Chappell wrote in his recent article.
However, the former Australian cricketer was not hesitant to admit that Raina can be an extremely dangerous player in One-dayers and Twenty20 cricket, as the left-hander has the ability wreck the ball with power and timing.
He also stated that other International sides will be looking to exploit the weakness of Indian batsmen, and the Men in Blue need to work on the glaring issues in order to avoid similar embarrassment in the future.
Elaborating on the characteristics of a good International batsman, Chappell explained that one must continue to work over one's shortcomings in order to become a true batsman at the highest level of the game.
“What then separates the successful players from those who fade quickly is the knowledge of when to utilise the different weapons in one’s armoury. A wise army general doesn’t order machine-gun fire when the situation calls for heavy artillery,” shared the
former Aussie batsman who collected 5345 runs in 75 Test matches.
