  1. If you end up really liking surfing you are going to own several different boards.  You will learn to surf faster on a long board, but they are harder to control at first when you are trying to get past the break, especially if you are smaller.  If you are dead set on a short board, I would get a 7'6 surf betty.  It's a fun board, wider than a typical short board.

For you husband I would get a long board because of his size.  Anything smaller to start out and he's going to have a tough time in smaller learning surf.  I'd try a 9'6 Modern or a Bonga Perkins longboard.

If your husband gets a longboard and you get a shortboard, you can switch off and learn on each others boards.

  2. if you are just transitioning from a long board you should probably look for a wider shortboard. maybe 6'2"-6'4", 20", 2 1/2" for you and something around 7', 21", 2 3/4" for your husband.

  3. you should get a 511 with medium rocker and about 2.5 thick, he should get the same buy maybe a 6'5, trust me i know what im talkin bout, ive surfed everywhere

  4. Its really hard to explain and give you all the types of surfboards. However, surfboards don't have to be brand new to learn, sometimes you can find some anused one and still get the most of it. Later when you become an avid surfer, go for the longer types.
