Surf board questions!!!!?

Ok, so I just recently got back into surfing (i surfed when I was younger) and I'm really liking it so far. For my birthday ( which is in a little less than a year (or even before my birthday) I would like a new or used nice quality surfboard. I've been riding on a wood and soft top long board. But are short boards better? I would like a short board just because they seem to be the boards that I could learn tricks on and stuff like that ( they are also what a lot of other surfers have ). What would be the right choice for me? And does anyone know good surf shops that sell new or used surfboards in southern California? Possibley even customized boards? With good prices?

  1. Well, first you should really try a shorter longboard, around 8 feet. If you want a shortboard, (don't care what anyone else has), try for a thick and wide one. Depending on how tall you are, adjust the length. Try a board a good 6 inches taller than you. Al Merrick makes good boards, try for a Flyer. Don't get a custom board. Try for a good used board, and don't spend more than 500$.

  2. if you are a biginner stay with a longer board with less rocker, it sounds like you might need a new board though

  3. I'd go with a medium length board, try 7'0" or 6'5". but if you wanted you could probably do fine on a 5 foot short. My favorite place in SoCal is probably Killer Dana's surf shop in downtown San Clemente. But just about every surf shop sells new boards, and you'll have to hunt around for some cheaper used ones. You could try asking people that are surfing around where you are if they have a shortboard or a medium length board they wouldn't mind selling to you.

if you want here's Killer Dana's website: www.killerdana.com

  4. Longboards are easier to ride than shortboards, so I'd start by renting a 7 ft, or 6.5 ft. If that's too easy, depending on your height, you can try something around 10 inches taller than you are. The more you practice on a shorter board, the better you are going to get quicker.
