Surf board size?

Question

Hello, i'm moving to Hawaii in a few months and was interested in picking up surfing while i'm there. What board size do you recommend? I'm 6 3 and 167 pounds. I'm quite certain that i will pick it up quickly due me riding a skateboard for the past 8 years, so i think it may help with the surfing.

Lucky you!

You definitely want to get a longboard, (at least 9' long). This will be the easiest to paddle and catch waves with and the easiest to learn to stand on - plus longboards are VERY popular in Hawaii.

then your sufrf board will be 11.7 long bc your 167 lbs. so that makes it that long or i need to know how old and long you are send me your age and lengh of you so i acutlly know.

9ft mini mal should have you sorted , enjoy surfing one of lifes great pastimes and once your set up its free , good luck!

I envy you! Hawaii has many different types of breaks, some of which change seasonally. There is something for every skill level.

Once you get there, and have gotten to be at home as an ocean swimmer, find a surf shop near the break you will be visiting. The folks in a real surf shop willl hook you up with lessons (a must if you have never surfed before, unless you have lots of pals who surf, who will be teaching you). They will also help you find the right board for your skill level (beginner) and the type(s) of waves found at that break. Like everything else, the more you surf, the better you will be, and you wil probably want to switch to a different board, and travel to different breaks.

Skateboarding can't hurt (I know I sure won't skateboard, concrete hurts when you fall on it). However, surfing is an ocean sport, and ability to be at home in the water, and the ability to take off (paddle and catch a wave), is necessary before balance becomes an issue. Do yourself a favor, go to the surf shop for this advice. Good luck, there is nothing else like surfing.

Hmm..... maybe a 8'7-9'3 board, 2 and a half - 3 inches thick and 18-19 inches wide if you're in the search for a longboard, which I hope you are.  Also, depending on what island you move to this information will vary.  Talk to a local surfer before you go straight into spending $600 or so...
