Question:

Surf trip to Costa Rica, would like to charter fishing boat too...?

I'm going down to Costa on a surf trip in early October, and am wondering about getting a boat to take me fishing while I'm there.

Most likely I'll be in Pavones / Matapalo, but might end up in Hermosa or Playa Negra... answers from people with experience in Pavones area would be most helpful.

Does anyone have experience getting a fishing boat? I'd rather not pay a thousand bucks to have some fancy charter boat take me out -- I heard that you can haggle with locals to take you out in search of some dolphin or tuna or even bluewater striking fish. As long as we can get out there and do some fishing (maybe some drinking) and have a good time, I'd be happy.

Has anyone done this, and if so, what kind of price should I be aiming for (will be split among myself and two friends)? Also, I'm not familiar with central american fishing and don't know what kind of fish are in season in October.

  1. You can pretty much go just about anywhere and find a great fishing shanty to get a guide and have a great day of trollling the open waters.  Surf places are everywhere you look. Costa Rica is an awesome place to be for whatever fun you are looking for.  You have several options with the fishing, most boats, around 30-40 ft will talke just you and your friends, or take up to 10 people, so there are options right there as far as cost goes.  Generally speaking, the prices have gone up over the past 2 years, it is $45 a person for the bait, tackle, crew, gas, and boat.  Could be a little less though dependent upon whether you go with a bigger outfit that has adverstising, or with a few locals who will charge about 30% less.  Not sure about what is in season, but either side of Costa Rica has an abundance and array of sport fish to catch.

  2. that's a good idea. I don't know nobody there, but here in Brasil, I have some place to fishing the big ones.

  3. you may want to post on a forum and see if anyone knows something about Costa Rica. I know this site is working on getting discounts with guides http://www.fishntell.com

  4. sounds amazing, can i come too?
