  1. Those dimensions do not make a short long board, they would probably not even make a good fun board.  I would look in the mid 7 foot range.  You would have good size for stability but it would still be responsive.  I would go for a more mini-mal or egg shape with 2+1 fins, more versatile that way.

  2. Do you know how to surf? If so, what type of board do you ride now? If you don't know how, go to a surf shop and hook up with some lessons. Let the folks there help find a board that suits your size, and your 'beginner' skill level. And don't listen to us on line, for all you know, we come form Nebraska. Go to a surf shop. Go surfing!

  3. bigger is better, up to a point...

After a certain point, you reach diminishing returns in regard to length. You need something that's easy to paddle and easy to control. For you size and height, I would get a 7'4" funshape to begin. You will be able to paddle it in a wetsuit, but it won't be so long that you wont get good control.

You can obviously go shorter, but it won't be as easy to learn. If you're not a fairly good swimmer and in good shape, you can probably would be better with a bigger board than you're wanting. A small board exhausts many new surfers very quickly. You'll learn a lot more and progress quicker with a 3 hour session where you're not exhausting yourself to paddle vs a 1.5 hour session on a board that doesn't have enough float for your level of conditioning.

  4. the length of the board is not all that matters when u buy a board.   I would suggest going and getting a used board that is around 6'4 and fairly wide. the boards that are 6'6 to 6'10 are for either bigger waves or for bigger people. someone your size doesn't really need that big of a board if your just starting out.

  5. You should get a fish (between 5'8-6'1)!!!! They are wide (between 20-23'') and thick (2-3'') so they are easy to paddle, catch waves, and float. But because they are short you can still easily duck dive, turn, and maneuver them. Plus they improve your style. Lots of people in Cali ride fishes, especially in the summer when the waves are flat.
