Surfboard size question...?

Hey guys, looking for some help on buying a surfboard. I'm 6ft, 183-189lbs. I'm looking for a short board. I'm a beginner but will pick it up soon and already have been out a couple of times on a long board and cought some waves. I'm in good shape (athletic ability, do skateboarding, snowboarding, Thai boxing, and general fitness).

Someone told me that a good rule of thumb is to get a board that's at least 6 inches higher than your height...

Wandering if that's true, and just in general, what would be a size good for me if I want to surf on a short board, do a lot of carves, etc.

  1. If your a beginner the longer the better. You should start out with a 7' 2". then when you get better work your down . Otherwise you'll just be flailing around in the white water.(I don't care how good of shape you claim to be in). Surfing's harder than you think. have fun!!

  2. hey man if you are a decent skater or snowboarder then i would get maybe a 6-4 to 6-6 shortboard. It may take you a little bit longer to get going but you should pick it up easy. Longboards are still fun but shortboards are just way more responsive. I have a mate who snowboards and he picked surfing up really quick. like in two months over summer he was carving along the face.

  3. what size is the longboard?

it really doesnt matter how good you are  at sports surfing is totally different...i would say work your way down if you have a long board then move down to a mini longboard mini malibu

    8'0- 7'2 anything in between

  4. Well since you are new to surfing, but have done some surfing I would say a fish board would be best. I would get like a 6"6 fish. This way you get the feeling of a shortboard but it will be more stable. You can progress with it for quite awhile before you will want a new board. If you get a board thats too short it will take a lot longer to learn. I got a 6"4 fish and learned on that. It took me longer too learn than it took my sister who was one a wider fish.

  5. because u skateboard and snowboard your should probably get a 6ft board. surfboards can cost a bit, and because of your already good balance skills your shouldnt find using a shorter board too much of problem. also with the shorter board once your get the hand of it, the tricks u do will be easiler and better, without having to buy a another new board.... hope that helps

  6. 6'2" to 6'6".

  7. That rule of thumb is so true, but since you are a beginner, start with a long board first, get aklicmated to it. It might be slow to react, but it might save you at the end if you get into something you can't handle, the board will make up for the mistake.

  8. the rule of thumb is true, but u should get a long board first
