  1. If you want to go with a shortboard, you should stick with something under 6'0.  Shapers will usually make shortboards pretty thin, but you should try to find a thicker one, which will do two things:  Make it easier to balance because of added buoyancy, and two, suit you for your build.

If you want a longboard, you'll be fine with anything.  GOOD LUCK.

  2. If you are a beginning surfer and not very confident in your ability to just go out there and shred, I would recommend that you start on a 7 1/2 to 8 1/2 foot "funboard."  It will be easier to paddle and ride than a shortboard.  The only reason I don't recommend a 9 foot + longboard that will easily catch waves and has a large surface area to balance/stand up on is because a funboard should be easier to control than a longboard.  If you are a seasoned surfer looking for a performance board you can make hard snap turns and catch airs with, I would recommend a board that is 1-3 inches taller than you.  If you are muscular/heavier/stockier, you may want to go with a little bit thicker of a board, but it isnt totally critical.

  3. go with any shape that is called a "fun board" or "egg" shape. . . i would recommend learning on like a 6'8 to 7'6....then as you advance and find out what type of surfing your into you can advance to a smaller more high proformanced board, keep your old board, or just cruise on a longboard. just remember: the best surfer in the water is the one having the most fun
