  1. grab an 7 to 9 foot foam top or soft top board. If you want to go into shortboarding, you might want to get the 7 foot, but it'll be less stable in the water than the longer ones. Also, theres the problem of how many fins it should have. Get at least two, but three or four is best for a beginner. Or, you could take lessons, rent a board then buy a hardboard (with whatever length you'd feel comfortable with) when you're ready.

  2. Try something around 7 or 8 feet.

  3. A 10 foot Softtop. Its a long, easy to ride board, which floats nicely. Its what I give people lessons on. Pretty cheap too.

  4. I assume you haven't taken a lesson as asked anyone.  I think most shops will tell you an 8 ft fun shape will be your best bet.  Don't go with an expensive custom to begin with.
