I am apromimately 5'7 and weigh 200 pounds, and I am 15.

I am thinking about buying a surf board and learning. How many feet long should the board be, and how much do you think it would run me used or new.

  1. Rent a longboard and see if you like it first.  A new one will be expensive at least $300 for a good one.

Longboard is REAL easy to pop up on. But get a shortboard if you want to do it right from the start and you'll have skills in no time..

  2. Im sick of people here telling other people to buy a longboard. Longboards are nothing but big peices of c**p and its like surfing on a front door, yeah youll be able to stand up on it almost straight away but woo-hoo any idiot could..

Buy a shortboard.. Because you are not too tall you have a lot of options here.. Ive been surfing since I was 12 and never once have I ridden a longboard.. Did it take me longer to get the hang of it for that reason? Yeah, but I learnt the hard way and can surf all the better because of that now.

Youre 5'7 so youd probably be good to start on a 6'6... Thats a common surfboard size, and because your 200 pounds get the board about 19 1/2 wide...

Dont believe that the longer the surfboard the better it will be, thats not true and anyone that says that doesnt know anything about the dynamics of a surboard..

The most important part of the surfboard is how wide across the board is and how thick the board is..The thicker the board, the more the board will float for you, therefore easier to paddle and catch waves..

    Good luck..

  3. Have you ever surfed before? Are you sure you want to get into it? All you REALLY need is a board, but when you start going consistently you will need to get accessories (leash, wax, possible wetsuit, car racks if you longboard, etc.) Basically it's expensive and if you aren't sure it's your thing, you will waste a lot of money.

If you've surfed before and want to get your own equipment, do it. If you haven't, I would highly recommend renting first. You can see if you even like it, if you want to do it a lot, and what kind of board you might want. You will most likely rent a soft top, which i don't recommend buying when you get a board, but you can see if you want to buy an 8'6 board or a 10'6 board. Go out with an instructor a couple times if you are really unfamiliar with the ocean, or just go with a couple friends if you are fine with teaching yourself. If all goes well and you want to get your own stuff...

Get a longboard. This is really 9'0 and up... but over 10'0 would be overkill for your size. In addition to length, there is width and thickness. These dimensions are important but don't worry about this on your first board, especially since it's a longboard.

Brand new surfboards are really expensive, especially longboards. I would definitely recommend buying used. Depending on the condition, a few hundred dollars is the price. Make sure it is in good condition. Any open dings, extreme discoloration, badly fixed dings should be avoided. There are plenty of surf shops with used board racks. This would be the best way to go. Online isn't as good, especially with used boards, because you can't physically hold it. You need to look at it and feel it, hold it under your arm, see the real color of it, etc. If it's in excellent condition, expect to pay a lot. But if it's in poor condition, don't get ripped off. Look around at lots of boards. Look at the condition they are in and how much they are priced at. When you find the one you want, you will be able to tell if it's a good price or not.

Don't settle too early, look at a lot and find the one that's just right for you.

  4. Start on  a 8 foot Rounded nose board with 2 3/4 inch wide.

    Try a pin tail.

ten work your way smaller or become a longboarder

  5. ?

  6. Start off with a "long board" and small waves. Any sets between 1 and 4 feet is enough. If you choose a "tanker" you will no doubt have an easier time learning and standing up. Maybe a 9 or 10 foot board considering your size.  New this could cost you a grand....used..... maybe 3 or 4 hundered bucks. You can also try boogie boarding first to get a feel for the waves. Good luck, be strong, and go for it!
