  1. It depends on how often you get out there.  The more you surf, the better you'll be.  Plus it helps to watch the pros and get tips from seasoned surfers.  But most importantly, just have fun and don't take it too seriously!

  2. Yeah, in my opinion, it's the hardest sport to learn. The conditions are NEVER the same so you're always relearning it.

But it depends on how often you go.

If you want to get good, just go consistently. You will be a stronger paddler, have a better sense of the ocean and waves, and can improve a lot quicker.

I have found that when you have the right board, you improve a lot faster. If you are on too short of a board, you might struggle and not learn as quickly. Make sure you've got the right board for your skill level.

Good luck. If you go twice as often you will improve 10 times faster. Have fun.

  3. 1-2 years

  4. It depends on how much effort you decide to put into it. Ideally, once you gain confidence in your basic abilities you should take advantage of this summer to surf your brains out in different areas around the coast and maybe see how different types of boards work for you. Paddle for anything rideable and jump on it. Be brave, but be careful, but don't be afraid to look silly or make a mistake. We've all been there.

Your general physical abilities will improve dramatically in the course of your first summer into surfing - you should probably wait til October to buy a wetsuit because your physique will be changing in the meantime. Swimsuits and rashguards should work just fine for right now. In a short while, it'll be no biggie for you to swim a whole mile in the sea, or free dive fifteen feet under it with no equipment at all for over a minute!

Make friends who surf, and who have cars, and go surfing with them at every opportunity. Compare notes, and critique each other. And most importantly, have fun!

  5. It'll take you about 2 months, 1 month if you really try your best. You won'nt be the best but you won't make your self look like a dork.

  6. Well it depends.

If you want to just ride a long wave with style probably 4 months.

    But I've been surfing a 1 1/2 years and I'm landing some 360 reverts.

(My dad has been surfing for two years and cant ride for a long time)

  7. I think the more often you surf, the quicker you'll learn.

    To improve yourself:

1.) Surf as often as possible

2.) Have surf buds who are better than you, it'll force you to push your limits skill-wise

    3.) Be fearless

4.) On days you can't surf, try to do home exercises that strengthen your surf muscles

5.) Watch surf videos for inspiration
