Surfers put on superb show at Les Dunes on day 2 of the ASP 3-Star Protest Vendee Pro
The latest Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Protest Vendee Pro continued to treat the fans to thrilling surfing action as the Round 3 (Round of 64) heats ran down at the secondary site of Les Dunes in Bretignolles-sur-Mer, France, on Friday, April
20.
The session featured a number of brilliant performances, with the likes of France’s Romain Cloitre, his compatriot Edouard Delpero, Portugal’s Francisco Alves and Germany’s Nic Von Rupp keeping the atmosphere electric.
In contrast to the opening day of the competition, the secondary site of Les Dunes offered much more promising waves to the local and international surfers who were determined to put on solid scores on the score-board to keep themselves alive in the contention
for the event title.
Cloitre gave his local fans plenty of reasons to cheer their lungs out during the ninth heat of Round 3 as he put on a superb performance to finish with a winning heat-total of 14.50 points.
Guadeloupe’s Charles Martin finished just behind Cloitre in runner-up place after scoring a heat-total of 10.50 points, consequently advancing through into the fourth round (Round of 32) as well.
France’s Tristan Guilbaud and his fellow countryperson Gregory Pastusiak finished with heat-totals in the seven-point range, consequently getting pushed out of the race for the event title and coveted ASP rating points.
The 10th heat saw Alves narrowly beat his compatriot Ruben Gonzalez, scoring a heat-total of 9.50 points against his rival’s 8.37. However, both the surfers made their way through into the next round due to their top-two finish.
Portugal’s Jose Ferreira finishing in third place with a heat-total of 7.13 points, whereas France’s Romain Laulhe rounded out the bottom position after finishing with a heat-total of 6.04 points. This led to the elimination of both the surfers from the
competition.
Rupp made his way into Round 4 of the competition as well after securing top position in the 11th heat with a heat-total of 11.57 points. He was accompanied into the next round with Morocco’s Abdel El Harim, who secured runner-up place with a
two-wave total of 9.14 points.
New Zealand’s Rowan Aish and Venezuela’s Ronald Reyes exited the competition field after finishing with a heat-total of 6.54 and 5.93 points respectively.
Delpero edged past Portugal’s Frederico Morais in the 12th heat, scoring 10.90 points against the latter’s 9.66, to claim top honours. Both the surfers advanced through into the next round of the competition.
France’s Bady Thomas and Hugo Palmarini failed to make the Round 4 cut after taking the bottom-two positions with a heat-total of 5.74 and 5.70 points respectively.
