Surfing's Popularity?

Would you say that surfing was more popular in the 1950's and 60's than it is today? Also, when do you think the surf craze of that time began to die down a bit. And lastly, when were the really big waves first pioneered, and by who? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

-Thanks!

  1. well surfing isn't dieing its just sectionedf out way more now. in the 50's every one was a longboarder. now you can be a big wave surfer, long boarder, arial, medium wave, surf bum, rich surfer... even hydro foils are coming into the world of surfing.

  2. I would have to say some of the first big wave surfers pioneered in the late 80's, at spots like Peahi (also known as jaws) Mav's, Blacks, and Teahupoo (pronounced Cho Poo) And they were Laird Hamilton, Peter Davi (whom recently died surfing 70 foot Ghost Trees) and Maybe Occy? Im not sure on the last one, hope this helps.

  3. Surfing is a lot more popular now than it was in the 50's, in the 50's people didn't understand the point of surfing and big wave pioneers: the most famous one i believe is Greg Noll who was one of the first persons to actually paddle out and make a wave at the big wave surf spot called Waimea Bay other early pioneers include: Pat Curren, Mike Stang, Buzzy Trent, George Downing, Mickey Munoz, Wally Froyseth, Fred Van d**e and Peter Cole they also didn't have the technology such as a leash  and really surfing never died after people knew what was possible it drew many more people to this offbeat sport of riding waves. The movie Gidget really sparked the amount of people that surf today that surfers excalime in the 50's.
