Question:

Surfing Destination?

I'm thinking about getting into surfing, possibly as a career, and I'm wondering what location would provide me with the opportunity to pursue this. What destination has affordable real estate, and good waves? My budget is 175,000, and I'm thinking somewhere in Mexico or Costa Rica.

  1. puerto escondido

  2. Check out Sayulita.  It's just 25 minutes north of the Puerto Vallarte airport.  Click the link below.

  3. south africa also has some of the biggest waves, down by Cape Town. But if you want to do it as a career, I would think Hawaii would be your best bet, but homes there cost like... a quarter of a million. Check into apartments there.

Here is more info about living in/surfing at South Africa. Read about "The Eastern Cape"

  4. The Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula would be a good place to start. Big winter waves, friendly people, and some real estate is still affordable.

  5. Zicatela Beach (Playa Zicatela) at Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca in Mexico. I have been there. I am told they are the 3rd best waves in the world. They are very big and powerful to say the least.

  6. I think you could get started in either Mexico or  Costa Rica with your budget.  Check out the competition - Corky Carroll does surf camps in Costa Rica and there's a poplular women's surf camp near Puerta Vallarta.
