I am looking for some good spots to surf within maybe a 3 hour drive from D.C. Anyone have some good suggestions? Ocean City? Virginia Beach? Outer banks (kind of far but maybe do-able) Also, if you know of a good one, are surfing lessons available there?

writeville beach. check the pic online before you go. it can be really inconsistent there.

  2. The HB Snake named some Sweet spots. I'm partial to Indian River, but i haven't been there in years. You are just about three hours away from Cape May & Atlantic County NJ. From Atlantic City south are some great breaks, including a couple that I won't share publicly. Also, last saturday I found some good news and some bad news...beach erosion has restored some breaks that have been 'lost' for the last couple years due to beach replenishment projects. That is sad for the beach only crowd, but great for the surf only crowd.

Check out south Jersey on Surfline.com, and if you get there , I might see you in the line-up.

  3. Plenty of places depending on how far you want to drive.  You can reach Cape Hanelopen and Indian River Inlet in DE in 2 1/2 hours.  Both breaks are sweet during the fall and winter.  For summer, you get some smaller surf with occasional bigger days all along Del Mar Va from Fenwick Island in DE, through OC, and clear into Virginia Beach.  However, if you want to drive to Va Bch (3-3/12 hours) you might as well drive about an hour or so farther and hit the Outer Banks.  The more popular breaks in OC are 68th st, 49th, 38th, and the OC Inlet.

For larger south swells, Assateague Island National Seashore locally is hard to beat.  It takes about 3 hours or so from DC.  It's located about 10 miles south of OC.

There is only one accredited surf school in OC, Snake's Surf School.  Lessons are available from beginner through advanced coaching by NSSIA certified instructors.  I've posted the link below.
