  1. Drink water before you surf, and if you eat something, make it small, like a couple crackers or an energy bar. Most lessons last around 2 hours, including some time on the beach learning how to pop up before you hit the water.

    Popping up is like doing a pushup, bringing your legs under you into a crouching position before you stand up. Remember to keep your knees bent. Your instructor will show you how.

    If you have time, swim freestyle for at least half an hour 2-3 times a week (ideally for at least 2 weeks) before your lesson. It'll help get your muscles used to the similar action of paddling a surfboard and you won't get so tired or sore afterwards.

    Pay attention to your instructor, relax, and have fun!


  2. Surfing is an ocean sport, to do it right, you have to be at home in the ocean, with its currents, rips, undertows and sometimes big waves. I don't just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. I have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued.

    That is what worries me when I read some of these questions. Lots of folks just don't know what they are getting into. The more times inexperienced people s***w up, and have to get rescued, the stricter anti surfing ordinances get past, and it makes it tough on the rest of us.

    Take the time time to learn about the ocean. Go swimming, body surfing and body boarding. When you are really comfortable with it, it's time to start surfing. Have fun!

  5. go in there ready to learn and dont get frustrated because that will like ruin the whole thing and you will not be able to do it as easily so even if at first your not getting it just stay calm and relaxed and take tips from ur instructor to improve. Have Fun!!
