Question:

Surfing Places?

I want to learn how to surf during my Spring Break in April. Where are some good places to learn? Hawaii makes me feel intimidated by all the skinny surfing people there.

What about the Bahamas or Bermuda? Any suggestions, please!

  1. I have attempted a surf camp at Sebabstian inlet,Florida. They have a good selection of waves to choose from, weather you are a beginner or experienced surfer

  2. Go to Puerto Rico

  3. Don't be intimidated here, I just walked to Waikiki beach this morning. People all shapes and sizes. Plus - its an island, there are endless options when it comes to surf areas. Whereas if you head to mainland beach ... thats it. I hear Waikiki is perfect for beginners, get on a long fat board.

  4. Where do you live? Are you close to the ocean (and close enough to where it will be warm enough in April to surf?) Southern California is the "Home" of mainland surfing in the US. Only the outer Bahama islands (and I won't name them to protect them from a tourist invasion) have any consistent rideable surf. There are some good surf sports in north Florida. The Carolinas have some great surf spots, and a mellow Spring break crowd. Most real surf shops (real surf shops, not bathing suit stores that sell surfboards) can help you get lessons.

  5. what about a local surf school at a beach close to where you live? if you don't live near the beach, and are planning on learning to surf over your spring break, then find a surf school wherever you're going and practice at surfbreaks that are less crowded so you can pick up on the basics quicker.

  6. Hawaii.

  7. I don't think Hawaii is full of the "skinny people" you're thinking about.  The surf schools are very friendly and unintimidating.  I have been in hawaii and seen men from 100 pounds to upwards of 350 pounds.  Surfing should not be intimidating either, I would say go to Maui and look into some surf schools there.  That would be your best chance.  Hawaii is a worldwide known surf paradise.  The waves can be used by beginners or pros alike.  Good luck and, try maybe Florida.  Florida is a small wave state and is pretty close to where you live compared to anywhere else with good surf.  Check out some schools in Florida or Hawaii and don't always go by price either.  Price is usually an in-effective means of finding a surf school.
