Surfing Question (anybody answer)?????

i go to hawaii every summer... this year i really want to learn how to surf.. any tips on what to expect..and how quickly can I learn?

Expect that the instructor who teaches you will know what you need to do.  Without making the folks in the big schools upset, I think you will learn more from a smaller school or an individual instructor.  I suggest your best bet is take a lesson away from Waikiki Beach if possible, maybe a school that teaches at Alamona.  Try sending an email to Alysha Surf School as they have modern boards and very personal instruction.  Most instructors can get you up and riding within an hour.  However, getting to the point where you are doing well will take a bit longer.

Research a good surf camp in Hawaii to attend near where you are staying (don't worry there are plenty). Try to avoid friends (usually not the best instructors) and personal instructors (wicked expensive). Surf camps are fun and really helpful because it gives you solid practice with trained pros who know what to do. After about a week, you should be able to surf by yourself pretty well. Surfing has an extremely slow learning curve, so don't expect to get good fast, but with consistent practice you will get much better. Just keep at it and remember surfing is for fun!

lean on your back foot and turn with your front foot

cath the wave after it breaks at first (the white water) and as you get better catch it while it is breaking but don't let it break on your head because it will hurt

start by riding the waves in on your stomach untill you get used to when to catch the wave, then slowly try and stand up

don't go into an area of the ocean where there are pick waves, start with small to medium sized waves, you'll have more fun on the medium waves but the hard waves are way too hard
