and all and i can turn the board okay but i cant get out to the big waves without getting smashed i jump the board over the whitewash and then when a good wave comes in i catch that

because at the moment i am surfing whitewash mostly, until the odd set that hasnt broken yet

comes in??

any ideas on how i can get out to the bigger waves

does turtle rolling work and how do duckdive getting the board under much deeper??

and also how does the board go accross the wave? does it happen naturally if you no what i mean like when i surf it goes straight down not accross is that because im surfing whitewash

when i turn i just sort of cutback but not sharp or anything

thanks

  1. Yes you need to paddle like a machine...really hard...practice ALOT!!!

And duckdive deeper by gaining speed with your paddling, quickly pushing your board down with you hands, one foot on the bottom of the board, and push ONLY once you're deep down underwater, you push and hold the board tight with your hands as you come back up behind the wave. there's lots of pressure so hold on.

But paddling hard before you dive so the speed converts into "deepness".....

Paddle hard before the wave does it's thing, requires good timing/anticipation. And aim the board diagonal on the wave, so you go along it. It's easy and natural to glide on the wave sideways...you'll be amazed....the board finds its way.

Benjamin...don't you think you plagiarised my answer just a bit???

  2. if u wanna catch big waves be a man get ova/under the waves and go out further and wait for the perfect wave an then it all happens man you hooked for life  its all in the strength just get out there and practice.....and dont get sad ove peaple dissing u for having a soft board if they do i mean i still ride soft boards when i have a chance lol.....its so easy and i go crazy on them and try and hand stand on them but just end up smashingmy head on the board witch doesent hert because its SOFTTTTT!!!!! yehhhhhh soft boards rule

  3. spend some time watching others surf and you will find your answer there.  videos are a source for you also.

    peace

  4. i just kept practicing and u will get the hang of it

  5. There a lots of previously answered questions on here about both duck diving and turtle rolling.

As for going down the line...that's all you.  You need to set your rail and turn to go down the line, or just take off at an angle and hope you don't outrun the pocket.  Sorta like turning a skate board but with different weight distribution.

  6. I would suggest lots of pull ups to develope your back and shoulder muscles.... as well as push-ups.... the hardest part of surfing is just what you're having trouble with... getting out past the shore breaks. Duck Diving is much more effective then the turtle roll.... make sure you're really paddling your a** off before you dive... then grab the board on the rails at your shoulders.... keep one foot on the tail and push the board down.... tuck your head right as the wave is about to hit.... as you're underneath the wave roll your back foot.... then start to kick your feet to help keep momentum.... pop out the back of the wave already paddling... you should be really cranking during all of this because the next set is about to break right on top of your head if you're not. also... while you're on the beach.... watch for the breaking point.... find a line up where you'll catch the most waves. take two points on land to help you stay in that line up.... once you're out past the breakers wait for a wave that looks steep.... if there are other people in your lineup make sure that you use good surf etiquette ... the person sitting deepest... and closest to the peak of the wave gets the wave.... once you see a wave that's all you... try and judge which way it's gonna break... left or right... unless you're home beach is a distinct point break or something where it only breaks left or it only breaks right.... once you judge which way the wave is going to break... paddle into it and cut in the direction of the face you want.... drop... make sure your bottom turn's got some nice pump in it... meaning... extend your legs as you make the drop. then set up for the lip man... cause you're ready to start throwin some spray.... hope this helps bro
