Surfing West coast of Mexico...?

Question

My girl and I are planning some down time in June and July. Which would be a better spot?

Puerto Vallarta or Mazatlan?

We don't plan to stay in posh spots. We are seasoned backpackers. Our Spanish is decent. Would like to spend some time surfing hopefully in an area that isn't full of rocks. with a nice beach. Any suggestions or opinions on surf spots would be great.

Pretty good surfing on the north end of the bay from Vallarta.  Generally better surfing further south in Colima, Michoacan and Oaxaca (Puerto Escondido)

Just read some wonderful thinks about Nayarit coast, north of Puerto Vallarta.

I suggest you do some research on the words: Riviera Nayarit, San Blas, San Pancho, Punta Mita (that is a high end spot, but it will give you and idea of the area) and Nayarit (that is the name of the state, Puerto Vallarta is in the adjacent state of Jalisco).
