  1. As a general rule, I tend to use a longboard whenever the waves are waist high or less, or whenever they are rolling and don't have a steep face.  I often take my longboard out on bigger waves if they are breaking slowly, particularly at high tied.  You need a face and some speed for a shortboard to perform well.  It also depends on how well you surf.  I have a very good friend who surfs Pipeline during the summer and on smaller days in the winter on a longboard.  His style is such that he looks better on his longboard on big waves.  If your style is twisting with quick short power turns, a shortboard is the way to go on almost any wave.

  2. Start on a longboard and when you start getting good get something in the 6'6" range or less.

Longboard or shortboard is just a matter of style, not about fitting the wave so much.

  3. shortboard and longboard totally different style, shortboard is more aggressive and longboarding is more of a relaxed chill style, but i would bust out the longboard when the wave is too weak and small for a shortboard

  4. Age 60+ is when you start using a long board and NOT until then!

When you can use a longboard if under 60...

    - If the waves are knee high, then if you are desperate to surf, hop on a long board.

    - Before a contest where, the waves are small, catch some waves on a longboard to help loosen you up before your heat. This will make your board feel more skatey and easier to manuever.

    - To catch all the waves from all the shortboarders and p**s them off.

    Good luck!

  5. If you are a begginer then start with the long board. but once you get good you should go with a short board. but thats your choice. it depends what you like better.
