My bestest friend in the world is turning sweet 16. And she is having the ocean surfing type of party. And I wanted to get her a surfboard, She has never surfed before but she has always wanted to. She wants me to try surfing with her, because she is afraid of sharks. I am not, I acctually love them, and want to go into a field with marine animals. How much would this cost me. She really wants to try it, and i think i can help her acctually do it. Is this a good gift??? Any other suggestions??? Anybody tell me a good place to buy a serfboard?? I am not looking for too expensive. =)

  1. Wow, what a nice friend...

There are different types of surfboards...they can be quite expensive - check ebay link here:  http://search.ebay.ca/surfboard_Surfboar...

I probably would buy her lessens first before buying a board.  Just in case if she does not like it.  It would be fun for both of you.  Go to a surf shop and inquire about it.

Good luck and have fun. :)

  2. i wouldn't recomend buying a surfboard! no way, especially if she has never surfed before.

a cheap board will set u back 200-300 pounds.

why not get her a surfing lesson instead? go to your local beach or surf shops.

also, u can get her surf dvds if she has an interest...try lords of dogtown - best film ever.

but yeahh shop around and phone your nearest decent beach...good luck.

  3. Their expensive, believe me!  unless your rich, you do not want to buy a friend a surf board. try taking her to lunch, before you and her ARE lunch in a sharks mouth. surf boards are VERY expensive!  your thinking a weeeeeeee bit too high here! do you want to BUY your friends friendship or something?

  4. Nice thought, but a bad idea. Real surfboards are expensive. And surfing is not as easy as you might think. Surfing is a little more complicated than it seems. And a good surfboard is a fairly large investment. Go to a real surf shop. The folks there can hook you up with lessons, and even rent you a board to learn on. Just work on your basics, and after you feel good, think about buying a board, but don't rush into anything.

Like some other folks here have suggested, a series of surfing lessons might be a much better gift (and certainly more affordable).

Before you buy anything, read the sad tale just brought here by Gossipgurl:

"HELP! Learning to surf on a 6'2 shortboard?????

Learning to surf on a 6'2 shortboard. Thats the only board I could find in my price range. I'm 14 and it took 8 months to save up for a board. I cant trade it for a longboard I already tried. And please dont tell me I should be talking to someone on the beach because I dont have any teacher or surfing friends.

How do I stand on the board if I try it sinks. WHY?

Can I have some tips on learning to surf??"

Here is the start of my answer to her:

"If you look back through the answers, you will see dozens of times that some us recommend that you LEARN first, and try a variety of boards FIRST, BEFORE YOU BUY A BOARD."

Surfing can be dangerous, so you have to understand the risks involved. Unless you are a good ocean swimmer, the ocean can be very dangerous. And, you can get banged up by your own surfboard, so you really need some lessons or help to get started. For young folks just starting out, I think that softtops (soft foam surfboards) are the best.

I have been surfing since 1966, and I hope you and your friend can both learn how to surf someday. Just do it the right way, and have fun!

  5. What about asking her parents to buy the surfboard for her and you could buy her a lesson and a wetsuit if the water is cold where you live.
