I live here in Fort Walton Beach and Im really excited to learn how to surf. The problem is no one i know knows how to do anything but drink and party. So Im going about this by myself. Does anyone have any tips or anything? Ive never surfed a day in my life but got a book and know the basics. I know I just need to get out there and do it but im a little nervous.:)

  1. Watch out for sharks.  Hahaha, just kidding.  ;)  Um...if you can't find anyone to take you out and help you along the first time then here are a few basic things I tell friends just learning...well, first of all, get a longer board...depending on how tall you are, make it about 2-3 feet longer than you and no longer or shorter, that should be perfect!  You will be learning in the foam first, don't go into the actual waves yet, just get out far enough to paddle into the foam and stand up in it.  If you do want to get out past the waves to catch an actual wave, paddle hard in between the sets, when it is at its flatest and I say hard because if you are not out before the next set comes, you won't make it.  When going for a wave, paddle for it ahead of time and as it gets nearer, paddle really hard, long heavy strokes and continue until you feel the wave start to pull you forward (make sure you head is down when you paddle and when you feel it pulling you forward, lift your head and chest), then jump up)!  Even ride the first few waves on your belly to get a good feel.  I normally don't like to help newbies who are wanting to learn just to be cool, but you sound like you really want to learn for yourself no matter what and thats what it takes.  So, have fun!
